Print Articles: Decoding Colombia's Complex Narrative on Peace
The Challenge
The Colombian peace process, a pivotal moment in the nation’s history, was characterized by diverse and often conflicting narratives. The challenge was to:
- Analyze the complex political discourse surrounding the peace negotiations
- Identify and compare the framing strategies of key actors
- Uncover how fundamental concepts like peace, justice, and security were interpreted differently
- Present a nuanced academic analysis in an accessible format for a broader audience
The Solution
As the author of “Processus de paix en Colombie: trois visions en conflict” (Peace Process in Colombia: Three Conflicting Visions), I developed a comprehensive approach:
- Research and Data Collection:
- Conducted extensive analysis of Twitter communications from key actors
- Focused on three main perspectives: the government, right-wing opposition, and FARC guerrilla
- Collected tweets and statements throughout the peace negotiations
- Discourse Analysis:
- Applied critical discourse analysis techniques to the collected data
- Identified key themes, framing strategies, and recurring narratives
- Compared and contrasted the language used by each actor
- Conceptual Mapping:
- Analyzed how each actor defined and used concepts like peace, justice, and security
- Created conceptual maps to visualize the different interpretations
- Academic-to-Public Translation:
- Transformed complex academic analysis into an accessible article format
- Crafted clear explanations of linguistic and political concepts for a non-specialist audience
- Multilingual Adaptation:
- Adapted the research, originally in Spanish and English, into a French article for a Belgian publication
- Ensured accurate translation of nuanced political concepts
