Investigation: Conservation of harlequin toads (Atelopus) in the Colombian Caribbean
Challenge
Harlequin toads, vibrant amphibians native to the Neotropics, face numerous threats to their survival, including habitat loss, climate change, and disease. Their plight, emblematic of broader biodiversity issues, needed to be brought to public attention. The challenge was to:
- Investigate the current status of harlequin toads in Colombia
- Explore conservation efforts in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta
- Craft a compelling narrative that resonates with a wide audience
- Highlight the intersection of environmental conservation and Indigenous knowledge

Solution
As an Environmental Journalist, I developed a comprehensive investigative report titled “The Song of Hope of Harlequin Toads”:
- Immersive Research and Training:
- Participated in a 4-month fellowship program on environmental journalism and social-environmental conflicts in the Amazon, organized by Consejo de Redacción, the Deutsche Welle Akademie and the German Development Cooperation
- On-the-Ground Investigation:
- Conducted fieldwork in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean
- Interviewed local conservationists, scientists, and Indigenous communities
- Narrative Crafting:
- Wove together scientific data, local testimonies, and personal observations
- Balanced the urgency of conservation with stories of hope and resilience
- Ensured the article was accessible to a general audience while maintaining scientific accuracy
- Collaborated with award-winning journalist Santiago Wills as my editor to optimize the piece for maximum reach and impact
