Multilingual Support: Amazonia Connect's Pause & Reflect Workshop
The Challenge
Solidaridad Network, in partnership with USAID and the University of Wisconsin, organized the “Year 2 Pause and Reflect Workshop” for the Amazonia Connect project in São Paulo, Brazil, in May 2024. This three-day event brought together over 40 specialists, scientists, and field managers from seven countries to evaluate project progress and plan future initiatives.
The organizers needed a skilled communications professional to:
- Document multilingual proceedings accurately, ensuring the proper use of specific terminology of sustainable development and environmental science
- Process diverse inputs from presentations and focal groups
- Facilitate communication across language barriers
- Produce inputs for a comprehensive event report (memoir)
The Solution
As multilingual communication facilitator, I implemented a strategic approach to meet the event’s complex needs:
- Captured detailed notes from presentations and focal groups in Spanish, English, and Portuguese
- Ensured accurate representation of technical discussions and regional perspectives
- Provided real-time language assistance in Spanish, English, and Portuguese
- Facilitated clear communication between international attendees during discussions and breakout sessions
Results
My contributions led to significant positive outcomes for the Amazonia Connect project and its stakeholders:
- 📊 100% of workshop sessions documented in three languages during day 2
- 🌐 Facilitated communication among 40+ attendees from 7 countries
- 📋 Synthesized inputs from 4 focal groups and 8 presentations
- 🤝 Enabled 4 new cross-country collaboration initiatives
- 🌿 Contributed to the refinement of regional sustainable agriculture strategies in 6 localities of the Amazon basin
